Coinciding with Climate Week in New York and PM Narendra Modi’s presence at the Climate Summit at UN, Dipanjan Roy Chaudhury spoke to Sumant Sinha, CMD ReNew Power on role of corporates in clean energy initiatives. Sinha explained to ET how ReNew Power is helping India achieve one of its commitments to the Paris Agreement.
What does Climate Week entail for Indian corporates and India?
The Climate Week NYC is an acclaimed international platform to initiate and sustain dialogues related to climate change and environmental sustainability. The forum aims to garner commitments from governments, businesses and civil society organizations on climate positive steps they can take in order to curtail the planet from crossing the 1.5° C threshold. For India, the forum is a platform where public environmental commitments can be made by the government, Indian companies and civil society organizations, to fortify India’s climate change leadership in the global arena. It is also an occasion for Indian corporates to commit for climate positive actions on issues like reducing carbon emissions or using electric vehicles for their fleets .
What is ReNew Power’s role in Climate Week?
As Chair of the India Advisory Group of the Climate group, I am trying to engage the Indian industry towards taking climate positive steps which would contribute to India’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and magnify the role of Indian corporates in the climate change and sustainability agenda. I am myself committing to adopt climate positive steps and initiating a call to action for Indian corporates to do the same.
What is ReNew Power doing for meeting India’s Climate gaols?
ReNew Power is currently India’s largest clean energy Independent Power Producer, and is mitigating 0.5% of India’s carbon emissions, generating 1% of India’s overall electricity generation through renewable sources. Through large-scale deployment of clean energy like wind and solar, we are accelerating India’s transition to renewable energy, and helping the country to generate electricity in a sustainable manner , mitigate carbon emissions and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.. ReNew Power is also helping India achieve one of its commitments to the Paris Agreement, which is ensuring that 40% of the installed power capacity in India is from non-fossil-fuel based energy sources by 2030.
